Laughter, Archetypes & Why Life’s Funnier with Custard on Your Face by Andrea Fortune

It’s April—the month of April Fools’ Day, punchlines, pranks and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. So naturally, I’ve been thinking about laughter, lightness and the comedian archetype. The Comedian—the inner jester who turn chaos into comedy and helps us laugh through life’s messiest moments. But did you know that archetypes are actually the unseen forces shaping how we think, feel, and show up in the world?

Free Event – 10th May 1.30pm-3.30pm
This month, I’m inviting you to a free event where we’ll explore archetypes—those deep-seated characters and patterns that live in our collective imagination. They shape how we think, feel, and act whether we realise it or not. These universal blueprints show up everywhere: in myths, fairy tales, movies, legends and movies. Whether you’re navigating heartbreak, career changes, or toddler-induced chaos (been there), understanding your dominant archetypes can be a game changer.

They come from the collective consciousness of our ancestors, which means humans have been telling the same stories for centuries—just with different names and costumes. That’s why a wise old sage, rebellious warrior, or noble hero feels instantly familiar. Knowing your archetype is like discovering the script you’ve unconsciously been following. Once you spot which ones are influencing you, you can either lean in—or rewrite the story entirely.

The Joy of Laughter
Meanwhile, let’s not forget the power of a good belly laugh. “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone,” the old saying goes. Having a friend on standby who can crack you up when things feel heavy? That’s soul medicine.
Laughter helps us bond, face taboo topics, and gain perspective when life feels absurd. Disasters are then turned into future dinner party stories!

Finding Humour in the Madness
From walking into a glass door while making confident eye contact, to sending a text complaining about someone to that person by accident, these cringe-worthy moments often become the funniest stories we tell. They teach us to lighten up, connect, and roll with life’s curveballs—with a giggle instead of a meltdown.

And Yes, Laughter is Good for Your Health – Science Agrees!
 A good crack up increases blood flow by 20% (your heart will thank you).
 Boosts immunity—hello, virus-fighting giggles!
 Relaxes your body for up to 45 minutes (take that, stress).

Even Harvard says we need to practice feeling good, and laughter is one of the easiest ways to rewire your brain for joy. So… while we’re on the topic of myths and legends, what’s the Moral of this story?

Next time life throws a custard pie at your face, metaphorically or otherwise, don’t rage—laugh, lick off the custard, and keep going. Your inner Comedian will be proud. And if you’re curious to explore the deeper forces (aka archetypes) that guide your journey, I’d love to see you at the event.

With love and laughter
